Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. Prosthodontist is a dentist specially trained to repair or replace missing teeth and other structures surrounding the oral cavity. This entails an additional 3 years of specialization training full time at an institution accredited by the American Dental Association.
Although all dentists are trained to do crowns, bridges and dentures, Prosthodontists are trained to accomplish the more complex treatments needed by those experiencing more severe problems that can occur due to medical problems, severe wear, long term neglect, improper treatment and aging. They are also trained to provide treatment for implants and TMJ disorders that are not typically taught to general practitioners in dental school.
A Prosthodontist's education includes several years of post-graduate training in complicated techniques and treatments.
They include:
Dental implants
Crowns and Bridges
Denture Fabrication and Therapy
Fixed and Removable Partial Dentures
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD/TMJ)
Cosmetic Dentistry
Facial Replacements
Total Mouth Rehabilitation
Dental Trauma Related to Accidents and Cancer Treatment
